The APC Through the Back Door: A Guide to the "Suggested Guidelines for Course Syllabi"
Dr. David M. Thompson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics & Epidemiology, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He also serves as Associate Director of the department's Bioinformatics and Datamanagement Center. Dr. Thompson teaches courses in applied linear statistical models, outcomes research, and longitudinal data analysis. His research interests include longitudinal data analysis and latent class analysis. He is part of a team at the OUHSC that is developing workshops in evidence-based health care. He provides research design and statistical support to a variety of projects in public health and clinical medicine. Learning Objectives Find the APC syllabus guidelines on the web page of OUHSC Admissions and Records. Include on course syllabi, basic course information, an appropriate course description and prerequisites, and brief statements regarding OU policies that are of primary relevance to students. Understand the philosophy and rationale that underlie the syllabus guidelines regarding the description of course conduct, objectives, and evaluation. Distinguish between global course goals, measurable and student-centered course objectives, and learning activities, which are structured to help students achieve the learning objectives. List the components of a useful learning objective. Distinguish those parts of the teacher's "contract" that objectives help specify. Distinguish those parts of the learner's "contract" that objectives help specify. Identify resources to facilitate the writing of learning objectives.
